Pininfarina Shows Off Stylish New B0 Electric Car at Paris Motor Show
Unveiled this week at the 2008 Paris Motor Show, Pininfarina showed off their new B0 electric car. Not only is the B0 stylish and modern looking, but it also offers top speeds of 80mph. It's also much closer to a "normal" sized vehicle than many other electric cars currently on the market.
The car is actually a collaboration between Pininfarina and Bolloré, a consortium of companies with expertise in batteries and capacitors. The B0 uses a lithium metal polymer battery pack to power the car, which is stored in the car's under carriage, and an electric motor drives the front wheels. A super capacitor provides short-term storage for electricity recovered during regenerative braking, and solar cells installed in the roof and front of the car also trickle energy into the battery.
At its current configuration, the car has a 150 mile range and a top speed of 80mph. It's a bit slow in revving up, and can go from 0 to 37 in 6.3 seconds. They have not released a 0 to 60 time, but estimates are that it is around 15 seconds. Short, quick bursts of speeds are not the electric car's forté.
On the interior, the car has some innovative features. For its instrumentation, the car uses two LCD screens, which are center-mounted. The main display on the instrument panel shows climate control, navigation, and entertainment. A smaller LCD unit sits on top of the dashboard, and shows speed, range, charge level, and other trip-related information.
Pininfarina maintains that they are still on track for their goal of mass production in 2010. There has been, however, no word on the pricing of this vehicle.
