Nevada Rocked By Arctic Quake

What appeared to be an earthquake in northeastern Nevada, was actually a seismograph picking up waves from an earlier earthquake in the Arctic Ocean say scientists.

An early report from the U.S. Geological Survey indicates that a 4.2 magnitude quake centered approximately 18 miles west of North Fork shook up Elko County around 3:07am Tuesday. After a seismologist reviewed the record, however, it was determined that phases from a 5.8 magnitude quake in the Arctic Ocean just seven minutes earlier were wrongly interpreted as a local earthquake.

Shaking was not felt in Nevada, however, scientists said that waves from an earthquake like the one in the Arctic can be detected around the globe.
