Obama Campaign Donations From Abroad May Total $3.3 Million
Having raised about $3.3 million from contributors not listing a home state or who designated a state with an abbreviation that did not match one of the 50 states or US territories, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama now being scrutinized. The Republican National Committee filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission on Monday, asking for an investigation into Obama's foreign contributions, amongst other things.
Most of the contributors did identify themselves as living abroad in foreign cities. Under federal law, foreign citizens may not make political contributions, but US citizens living abroad are permitted to make donations.
The list of contributors does not include donors who have given less than $200 and whose contributions do not have to be itemized, and some of this money could have also come from overseas. Approximately half of Obama's $455 million in contributions so far are unitemized, and the campaign does not identify those donors.
Republican John McCain's campaign lists all donors, even those who give less than $200, on his we site. When asked why the Obama campaign doesn't do the same, senior Obama adviser David Axelrod said that they return improper contributions.
In order to verify citizenship, the Obama campaign has now begun requesting passport numbers from donors.
Independent watchdog groups have begun asking the Obama campaign to give more information about its fundraisers, and to provide information about small donors by zip code or county.
