Browns Coach Romeo Crennel's Address to the Media Today in Berea

Here is the transcript of Browns head coach Romeo Crennel speaking the press today:

(Opening statement)- “It’s Friday, we’re going to continue our preparation for the Monday night game with the Giants. Usually today we work situations, short yardage, goal line, two-minute, red zone and kind of get a move-the-field situation, and so we’re going to do that today and move forward as we approach the game. I think it’s going to be an exciting time for the city, everybody enjoys Monday night football so we are going to enjoy it as well.”

(On injuries)- “(Mike) Adams got his foot stepped on yesterday so he was a little limited but he should be going today and we will see what he looks like. Donte’ (Stallworth) is making progress and he is doing halfway decent. Ryan Tucker is trying to get himself ready to play so he is doing pretty good. The guys who will not practice today are (Kevin) Shaffer, Shaun Smith, he is getting a re-check on that hand and (Kellen) Winslow. The doctors have taken a look at him, they kept him overnight in the hospital and we anticipate that he will be released today. His game status is questionable, that is what he is and that is what we are planning that questionable is 50-50. Hopefully he will be there and as the next couple days go on and the medical people let us know more then we can let you know more. He has an illness, I’m not saying what kind of illness it is, I am not a doctor. I have spoken with him and in some cases there is some privacy that is involved so I am not talking about his illness. His arms and legs are not falling off or anything like that, he is truly questionable for the game.”

(On Kellen Winslow playing with pain)- “I think that’s up to the doctors. If the doctors say we know you can play with pain but we are not going to let you play, then they are not going to let him play but it’s not that situation. He is a competitive player, we all know that he has had some injuries that he has had to deal with and he has played through them. At times we have had to manage him so he can play through them. We know that he will be out there if at all possible. I don’t know what else you can say about it other than if it’s possible that he can be there then he will be there.”

(On Martin Rucker)- “He just got back and started practicing. He is making some progress but he has missed a lot of time so I don’t think that we can say that he will be out there on Monday.”

(On who will start at right tackle)- “Shaffer hasn’t been ruled out yet so I’m going to wait to get a final determination on him before I make a final determination on Tucker.”

(On facing Justin Tuck)- “Ryan Tucker is a competitive guy and he will represent himself well. The thing is, is that his timing is not what it needs to be and really he hasn’t seen the kind of athletic ability that a Justin Tuck brings this year. The first time you go out there, I think he will probably have to get his feet wet and get settled and understand where he needs to be with his balance. That will be a big part of it on his sets because usually when you face a speed rusher you tend to over-set a little bit if you haven’t been working on it and then the guy beats you inside and if you don’t set wide enough the guy beats you around the corner. There’s a thin line and experience helps you get to that point where you know exactly where you need to set and get your feet and balance correct so you can handle the outside moves and inside moves. It might take a rep or two for him to get to that point to when he’s totally comfortable.”

(On the Giants defensive line)- “The whole defensive line group is a good defensive line group. The tackles bring something inside and the ends bring the speed outside but probably Justin is the most effective overall guy.”

(On the national exposure)- “I think if we can win the game then it would be huge. If we play well then it’s not a good as winning but it’s a step in the right direction. I think what the players in the locker room want is to show that we are a better football team than we showed the last time we played these guys on Monday night. I think that has been the focus all week and I think they are going to play very hard.”

(On Shaun Smith)- “If he gets clearance then he will be casted up and should be able to play, the issue is if he gets clearance or not. I don’t think that anybody knew that surgery was going to be a setback. We had the bye-week coming and thought we could get it repaired because it was going to have to be repaired at some point. The thing that they were concerned about was because it was broken, it might move and then if it moves it becomes a major problem. That’s why they decided to have the surgery.”

(On playing on a national stage)- “I think sometimes on a national stage guys do get amped up but we have been talking to them all week about being composed and keeping their composure. I think the outcome of the last time we played the Giants, we might have been too amped and some of the mistakes we made in that game hopefully we learn from those mistakes and not make them this time around.”
