Music Review: So This Is Progress, The Status

Pop rockers, The Status brings us their brand of music with So This Is Progress. “Get Back On Your Feet” is the first track offered on here and is full of pretty melodies set to whirling riffs and fills of breaks alongside tons of chants and singing making this an easy-going cut that borderlines on lilt and tough. “Where The Heart Is” continued to throw out the emo-laced pop tracks as it has irritating harmonies, but nice tones and sleek chords as this is an alright track and could be perfect for mainstream radio.

More of the same friendly power-pop stains this release on “America” as they slowed down the tempos and added in some harsher licks and tighter rhythms, but the triteness of their lyrics an the peppy nature of their scheme is way too bright and sunny. “Can You Hear Me” is just an unadulterated array of sweetened stomach-churning rock an roll as they have the goods musically, but vocally it’s cheeky and gleams like an ordinary emo rock group’s try at being rugged. “The Wake Of What’s Been Done” is their offering of combining punk and rockabilly with the emotive style that’s been prevalent on this record as it’s not that bad of a cut as it’s full of vigor, strong snares, darker tones and harsher lyrics that’s a good song to place in themiddle of this album’s listing.

The Status finally get back into the groove with “Waiting” which is their power ballad of sorts as it’s bordering on being whiny; yet has something positive in its method. “This Is Not Goodbye” is a typical pop-punk anthem that’s good for the live crowds, but is a limp-wristed ditty. “I Was Sinking” finishes off this album much differently than most of it as it’s a sullen stripped and ripped apart song neglecting electric guitars and filling it up with acoustics as it’s not awful and is a good effort. The Status had some good and bad moments on this release, but So This Is Progress is an aptly-named title for this thing as they still have some work to do, but they’re close to being exceptional.
