Denny's Offering Free Grand Slam Breakfasts Today

Hungry and low on cash? Denny's is offering free Grand Slam breakfasts today, Tuesday, February 9 from 6am to 2pm. If you're headed out there, be ready to wait. We've heard that the lines are long in some areas.

Denny's did the same promotion last year, and said that in 2009 they gave out more than 2 million free meals. One of the restaurants most popular menu items, the Grand Slam breakfast consists of two eggs, two pancakes, two pieces of bacon and two sausage links.

Fourth Season Could be the Last for Mad Men

In its three seasons on air, AMC's "Mad Men" has attained an almost cult-like status and has amassed a following that few series ever do. But now one of the show's stars, January Jones, is hinting that creator Matthew Weiner might be ending the series earlier than most would like.

Speaking with Stella Magazine about the upcoming fourth season, which begins filming in April, Jones said:

"It may be the last one. I'm a firm believer in quitting while it's hot. Besides it can't go on for ever: I don't want to see Betty in Spandex in the 1980."

Tiger Woods' Wife Gives Him Six Months to Save Marriage

Time is ticking for golfer Tiger Woods. His wife, Elin Nordegren, has given him six months to save their troubled marriage. After picking her husband up from sex rehab in Mississippi last week, a close friend of Elin's revealed that she is "convinced there is hope for the marriage".

The friend added:

"The doctors told her she shouldn't underestimate Tiger's ability to learn new coping skills and grow as a person. And they say he has made remarkable progress."

The friend added:

"It is so hard for Eli. The reality is there is still a lot of love left for Tiger. That's why she is willing to give him another chance. She would hate herself if she just gave up on him. But one thing is for sure, Elin won't be duped twice."

Woods, 34, had more than a dozen affairs with various women during his marriage to Elin. These all came out after his Thanksgiving Day crash and a story that ran in the National Enquirer.

Is There a Need For a Used Car Market Place?

The used car parts industry does not have a proper market place in these times.

A market place is the meeting point of a business with its customers. It may be physical or virtual. It is a place where customers and businesses go shopping knowing that they will find what they need and at the right price.

What is an effective market place? Is it the store opposite your home or the Wal Mart a few miles away? The fact that you will drive a few miles to the Wal Mart to make your purchases makes it clear which is the effective market place.

Every industry has its own exclusive market place. For example, clothing may be available in a mall or electronic goods in a show room. However, the used car parts industry lacks such a market place.

This industry has great potential. It sells OEM parts at a fraction of the cost of the dealers. Regardless of this potential, if consumers and repair shops do not have a market place available for used car products, they simply won’t buy these. EBay and car--part.com cater to a niche group of customers who have the time and energy for engaging in transactions with them.

The customers who are ignorant or do not have the time will keep on buying OEM parts from dealers while some better informed ones will buy Chinese replicas.

Obama Approval Ratings Nosedive to New Low

President Barack Obama's overall approval rating has hit a new low. According to the results of the Marist College survey released Monday, independent voters are particularly fed up with the job he has been doing.

Obama's overall approval among all registered voters has hit a new low of 44 percent, which is the lowest of any poll to date that uses people to survey voters. Among independents, his job approval rating has sunk to to just 29 percent, and his disapproval rating is almost double that at 57 percent.

The massive loss of independent voters could be devastating from Democrats if the trend continues through Election Day this fall. Independents have stayed away from the Democratic Party in off-year elections in both New Jersey and Virginia, and most recently they lost Massachussets when Ted Kennedy's old seat when to the Republicans. Rep. John Murtha of Pennsylvania died Monday, and is in danger of being lost by the Democrats as well.

Kasich Investor in Company that Plugs Ohio as "Better Than Ever" For Business

Republican Gubernatorial candidate John Kasich holds 45,000 share of stock in company that says “Ohio’s business climate is better than ever.” Oops.

The revelation came in a blog by former Plain Dealer reporter Bill Sloat in his meaninful blog out of Cinicinnati.

Read the story here:

CINCINNATI (TDB) -- John Kasich, the Republican candidate for governor of Ohio, serves on Invacare Corporation's board of directors and owns 45,000 shares of stock in the Elyria-based medical products manufacturer. (See the April 2009 proxy statement above.) Kasich's company -- which has made him rich -- loves the state. And while Kasich is campaigning on a theme that Ohio's tax climate is miserable for business growth and entrepreneurs, Invacare is taking part in a national advertising campaign that says "Ohio's business climate is better than ever." While Kasich claims Gov. Ted Strickland's administration has been chasing jobs out of the state, Kasich's company sees Oho as "an ideal location." Indeed Invacare's (IVC:NYSE) version of Ohio is poles apart from Kasich:

Pennsylvania Governor to Set Election Date to Fill Rep. John Murtha's Seat

Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell has announced that he will decide in the coming days when to schedule a special election to replace Rep. John Murtha (D-Penn.), who passed away Monday.

Murtha passed away Monday at Virginia Hospital Center following complications from gallbladder surgery.

By law, Rendell has ten days to schedule an election to replace Murtha, who had held the House seat for 36-years. He must also pick a date that is at least 60 days later.

Rendall noted that it would save taxpayers money if the election would be scheduled on the state's May 18 primary date, but said that he could set it sooner if Congress plans to vote on extraordinary issues before then.

Whoever would win the seat in the special election would fill out the remainder of Murtha's term, which ends at the end of this year. That is, unless they would also win in the general election in November.

Boycott WKYC for Slashing Pay of Its Workers

Cleveland’s TV station owners are – as are other corporations – taking advantage of the job problems – by slashing the pay of its workers. It’s for no other reason than they can apparently get away with it.

The Cleveland Scene has been watching this issue.

This item on its blog reveals that WKYC-TV, Channel 3, is slashing pay without dealing with its union. Just cut it and let them run to the NLRB, I guess is the attitude.

What people need to do is tell WKYC that they will boycott the station’s news as long as its workers are being so shabbily treated.

Here’s the Scene piece:

TROUBLE IN TV LAND

After nine months of difficult negotiations, management at Cleveland’s WKYC-TV3 has broken off labor negotiations and implemented a unilateral pay cut for union members.

The National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians, Communications Workers of America (NABET-CWA) says the station is in violation of its contract, which should have been in place for another 18 months. It’s filed a grievance with the National Labor Relations Board and is now seeking a federal injunction to enforce the contract.

A Fistful of Oscar Picks

They announced the Oscar nominations last week and overall, there weren’t a lot of surprises to be had. With the exception of the Best Actress, every major category looks like it has a lock. So, if I give my list of who is going to win I should look like a genius, but if things are not as they look, then I may feel foolish by the end of Oscar night. I’ll take my chances:

Best Supporting Actress

Mo’Nique should have this all wrapped up for her performance in Precious. While Maggie Gyllenhaal is excellent as the girlfriend who is weary of her country music singin’ alcohol chuggin boyfriend in Crazy Heart, and the two female stars of the George Clooney film Up in the Air are very good in their roles, no one in this category can compare to Mo’Nique’s incendiary performance in Precious. She owns the screen from the moment she appears on it. “A Ha!” you say; I failed to mention Penelope Cruz for Nine. No I didn’t. I would rather come up with a list of other actresses that should have her spot than think of that movie again.
