DVD Review: Carlos Mencia Performance Enhanced
Carlos Mencia kicks off his newly released title "Performance Enhanced", which originally aired on Comedy Central and was released on DVD yesterday, by touching on one of the issues that he has become known for: race. He starts off with a mention that Barack Obama might become our next president. He also tells his audience that Obama is the whitest black person on earth, and that if we can't vote for him, we'll never vote for any other black person.
Not content with the obvious Obama related race jokes, Mencia moves on to mocking Black History Month, Dog the Bounty Hunter, whiny Mexicans, white guilt, people who tell him to stop telling race jokes, and the fact that only blacks can use the "n-word".
I'll have to admit, I thought the performance was dry, but stuck with it hoping it would get better. At this point, I may have smiled at one comment, but other than that, Mencia hasn't come close to making me bust out laughing. That's an epic fail for a comedian. The material is abrasive, not very funny, with a healthy dose of shock value.
Further into the routine, things don't get much better. The only one laughing in this room where I'm watching the DVD is Mencia, who occasionally chuckles at his own jokes on screen. Mencia moves on to insulting various laws, the war in Iraq, and an unfunny bit on how we could defeat the Muslims by dropping bacon on them.
The special originally appeared on Comedy Central as a 45-minute program, but on the DVD is the full version which runs 66 minutes. If you're already a fan of Mencia's brand of comedy, you'll probably love this DVD. Otherwise, I'm not sure I would recommend it.
