Browns Head Coach Romeo Crennel Explains Replacing Derek Anderson with Brady Quinn

Cleveland Browns head coach Romeo Crennel explained his teams move of replacing starting quarterback Derek Anderson with Brady Quinn today in a press conference in Berea. Here is what Crennel told the press about the move, and other issues regarding the team that will play against the Denver Broncos on Thursday night:

(Opening statement)- “Brady Quinn will start at quarterback on Thursday. I made the decision yesterday. Yesterday was kind of a combination day, it was a Monday-Tuesday kind of day. In the morning it was more like Monday and the afternoon was more like Tuesday. I felt like we needed a different dynamic in the offense so that is why I made that decision. Some of the things that had to do with it were our record, offensive ranking, offensive production so I made the decision to make the change. I wanted to talk to the players, those two guys, about that decision and inform them about it before I told anybody else. I informed them yesterday afternoon. I talked to (Derek) Anderson first and then I talked to Quinn afterwards. Anderson was disappointed, but he is a professional. He will handle it and he will deal with it. Quinn is a professional and has been all along and he was thankful for the opportunity and I think he will make the most of that opportunity. You look at it and you say what about timing, the short week had nothing to do with it. It was just time so I did it and we are going forward. We are not throwing in the towel. We are not giving up on the season. We are going to beat Denver and we are going to get ready to do that and we are going to move forward with it. I think Quinn will represent himself and represent the Browns very well. This is a lifetime opportunity for him to be quarterback of the Cleveland Browns and now he has got it. We will see what he can do with it. Anderson will continue to be a professional. He will continue to work. He will do his job. If he is called on he will go out and he will perform. That is what you do in this business. He is going to be a good teammate to Brady as Brady was a good teammate to him. That is where I am and that is where we are going. We are going to get ready and play Denver.”

(On who made the decision)- “It’s my decision. I informed the organization what I was thinking and they told me it was my decision and they would back whatever decision I made. I feel like I have their backing.”

(On when the decision was made)- “We have been talking about this for a while now. Usually I try to be pretty thorough about what I do and evaluating things. I just felt like it was time and that is why I decided to do it.”

(On Derek Anderson’s play)- “The play was inconsistent and the record indicates we are an inconsistent football team. I have told you guys all along that the supporting cast impacts Derek’s play but he is a quarterback. Along with the position comes added responsibility and also added scrutiny. It is part of the job. He will live with it and we will go on.”

(On if the move is permanent)- “We will see how it goes. I don’t think you can say anything is ever permanent or whatever. We will play him and we will see.”

(On if the fans had any say on the move)- “Generally, I don’t think they have my telephone number so I haven’t been fielding calls from the fans. I make decisions, what I think is best, what I think needs to be done and then we go do them.”

(On when he addressed the team)- “This morning I did. Basically I told them I was making a change at the quarterback position that Brady was the quarterback and the thing I needed was for everybody to pull together as Browns and make this thing work. I think that is what they will do because it’s their job and they want to win. We are going to try to win the rest of this season starting with Denver.”

(On making a change during a short week)- “We had to narrow things down anyways because of the short week. If anything that plays into what we were planning – a little less stuff to do. I don’t think the short week makes that much a difference. If Anderson were the quarterback and he got hit on the head the first play of the game, Quinn would have to go in to play. I wouldn’t be able to tell the officials, ‘Hold on. Give me a week to let him practice to get ready to go.’ We are going to go play. We play football, that is what we do.”

(On the challenges for Denver)- “It will be a little tough for them to try to do all their homework on Quinn. To try to figure out what they want to do because they have had to prepare for Anderson. Because it is such a short week a lot of times what teams do is just carry the game plan they had the week before and carry it forward – the basic things anyways. Probably they will say, ‘Okay we have got a young guy starting so let’s see if we can rattle him.’”

(On Quinn’s first start being at home)- “It might help that the first game is at home because the crowd will definitely be for him. That should lift him up a little bit. You don’t have to deal with the hostile environment, crowd noise and things like that so hopefully it will be a help.”

(On changes in the offense)- “Not a whole lot. I think that not knowing exactly how he is going to play or perform, we might limit some of the things we try to do early on and see how he handles them. If he handles them okay then we can go with it. He is familiar with the terminology. He has been here a year and a half. He knows the offense so we will try to play to his strengths.”

(On Brady Quinn’s leadership)- “He still commands the huddle. He was running the show team and they are kind of running off cards, but he takes command and he calls the formation as our offense calls it. He tells them what routes to run in our terminology so he does take command of the group he is working with. I think it is part of the job because you are the leader of the offense. If you have command of your huddle and show leadership the guys around you feel more confident about what you are able to do and probably more confident in working for you.”

(On the team’s response)- “I didn’t give them an opportunity to be surprised or disappointed. I just told them what it was and I told them I had to move on to Denver. We started talking about Denver right away.”

(On if there is no turning back)- “I don’t know that anything is ever permanent so we will play the games and see how it plays out. Knock on wood, I hope the guy doesn’t fall on his face but if he falls on his face you have got to do something because I can’t go play quarterback.”

(On running a no huddle)- “I think that we feel like operating our offense, we operate better from a huddle. Get a play call and get things done so everyone can get on the same page. That works a little better for us so that is why we haven’t focused on no huddle.”

(On Eric Steinbach)- “Eric has a pulled muscle in his rib area. Pulled muscles sometimes can be difficult. He is not going to practice today. He is questionable for the game and we will see how it responds.”

(On injuries)- “Shaun Rogers (rib soreness), Eric Steinbach (rib), Lawrence Vickers (high ankle) and Corey Williams (shoulder) are not practicing today and they are questionable. (Donte’ Stallworth) is going to be out there and doing something.”

Probably in the minority but

Probably in the minority but I think they should of stuck with DA for at least one more game. He didn't lose that game against Baltimore. There goes his trade value either way.
