Video: Houston's Aubrey Coleman Steps on Arizona Basketball Player Chase Budinger's Face
In the 1970's, Bill Musselman's University of Minnesota squads were known for some of the most physical play in the Big 10. It got so bad that Ohio State University player Luke Witte was hospitalized after a game which tarnished the coaches legacy. Maybe Tom Penders, who guided Texas to quality teams and now has the University of Houston on the upswing, should take a look at at Musselman's career and not protect a blatant act of brutality that his player committed yesterday in contest that matched Houston versus Arizona. Houston Cougar player Aubrey Coleman stepped on the face of Chase Budinger which will go down as one of the most brutal plays on a basketball court this decade. Instead of admonishing his player, Penders decided to protect Coleman saying:
"I know Aubrey, and I have never seen him lose his temper or composure or anything," said Penders, who called Coleman the Cougars' best player. "I'm just sorry the official interpreted it that way. The way I saw it, Aubrey got tangled, and his momentum carried him forward, and I think it was a mistake."
Budinger says that he believes that Coleman stepped on him purposely:
"He stepped on my face, and you can see some footprints on my jersey," Budinger said, adding he thought it was deliberate. "Without a doubt. . . . Anytime you get kicked in the face, I'd hope you'd retaliate."
Here are videos of the Houston/Arizona battle, along with the Minnesota/Ohio State fight that still is an uneasy subject with many loyal Buckeye fans.

another example of the kind of sportsmanship the african american has brought to sports.

Well here is another famous example:
This is one of the most ignorant and flagrant comments I've seen in a while.
That is completely a correct statement. Time and time again a black athlete does something stupid and hurts the sport I love.
RACIST MUCH?
But it was ok for Christian Laetner to step on the kentucky basketball player huh. You make a comment like that lumping all african americans into the same group but I bet one of you favorite players or a couple of your favorite players are african american.
That guy should get kicked out of school for that. He could of killed that kid.
These comments are so stupid. He really didnt try to step on the guys face. i know aubrey as a close friend and team mate. honstly he really didnt mean anything by it. it was a mistake and it should be treated as one. dont make it bigger than it really is. watch the video, his face was straight ahead when he was walking not directed on the guys face.
He wasn't exactly surprised to feel flesh under his feet. He didn't react the way people normally react when they step on something "accidentally". He didn't appear particularly concerned about what was going on....
And, of course, he and his teammates couldn't stop themselves gloating, could they?
What was with that handshake thing, if it was an "accident"?
May the day be coming SOON when we no longer put up with players like this. Sports figures who can't be sporting need to be thrown out permanently, so that we can enjoy our sports as sports, and not as tabloid spectacles.
If it had been the other way around, you wouldn't feel this way..
Look, it's not a race thing, there are numerous white guys that have done dirty stuff on the court, field, or any other athletic arena you want to look at. It was a chump move by the Houston player, and he should at least be suspended, but lets not make this a race thing because of your own little personal hang-ups.
i saw the game. it was a flagrant foul and the player should receive a larger punishment.
however, the first comment on this board is ignorant and inexcusable and the type of thing that the weak and feeble minded among us have the courage to say in online forums.
Seriously man this guy should be given a years suspension at the least. Had it been a white player who did this you would hear racism cried.
Put the guy to sit his ass down on the bench.
I agree!! If it would of been a white guy, everyone and there mother would be saying it was racism !!!
How can you even compare the two incidents? And, you people with the racist comments should be ashamed.

You think stepping on someones face is commonplace? That is why I brought up the two incidents. That was disgusting and I have seen a lot of sports. Coleman is really lucky he didn't cause more bodily harm. Also, the fact that Penders is protecting his player is disgusting.
At first, yes people do look at color when the people involved are of different race... it's human...
BUT The fact that homedude's team gave him congratulations when being ejected is rude and complete bullshit... one can only imagine that they were saying "Damn sonn you really stomped datt crackaa" and yes, that is a sorry attempt at African American Vernacular English(if you don't know what that is, look it up)
IMO i think it was a heat-of-the-moment ordeal turned racist when both sides realized the people involved were of a different color. Welcome to the real world.
I think it's a disgrace that the school, conference, etc. are only giving this asshole a one game suspension. After reviewing the video, they should suspend Tom Penders for defending this loser. I doesn't matter that he'd never acted in such a manner before. He did the other night, and that's all that should factor in. Shame on Conference USA and the University of Houston for such a pathetic response to such a blatant and dangerous act of violence.
who cares blacks took over sports deal with it
if it ws a white man nobody would make a comment. That is very racist and I am white
