Announcement by GM Today Expected to Eliminate Shift at Lordstown Plant

Northeast Ohio is expected to receive more bad news today when General Motors makes an official announcement on the fate of a shift at their Lordstown assembly plant. Published reports by the Associated Press state that the struggling automaker will announce that one of two remaining shifts will be cut. Last month, 890 jobs were lost when GM eliminated the third shift at the plant.

The plant makes the Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 which saw demand skyrocket last year when gas prices reached record highs. With the struggles of the auto industry as a whole and with gas prices coming back to tolerable levels, sales have slipped.

The official announcement is expected to come this morning with many autoworkers at the plant to be notified of the plans tomorrow.
