Kellogg Dumps Phelps Over Marijuana Photo
Not unexpectedly, Kellogg is dropping their sponsorship of Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps following the publication of a photo which depicted him smoking marijuana. Kellogg will allow the swimmer's contract to expire at the end of the month.
A Kellogg spokesperson issued the following statement:
"We originally built the relationship with Michael, as well as the other Olympic athletes, to support our association with the U.S. Olympic team. Michael's most recent behavior is not consistent with the image of Kellogg. His contract expires at the end of February and we have made a decision not to extend his contract."
In addition, Kellogg also decided not to renew its Olympic Team sponsorship, which expired in December 2008.
Phelps also has a rather lucrative deal with Subway, which has thus far declined to comment on the situation. Subway has a campaign featuring Phelps ready to hit the airwaves, but at this point it seems like a delay is likely.
Instead of dropping Phelps, Subway could instead take a different angle with their TV ad campaign. The theme could be "When I get the munchies, I pick up a Subway sandwich." Imagine the new demographic they'd reach with that one.
On a more serious note, it seems like while some of Phelps' sponsors have accepted his apologies, others are not too pleased with his behavior. Before long, he could see more contracts expire without being renewed or some companies outright ending their deals before they expire due to some kind of morality clause.
Meanwhile, Phelps has been suspended from USA Swimming for 3 months. South Carolina police, where the photo is alleged to have been taken, are also seeking to bring drug charges up against the swimmer.

Kellogg Dumps Phelps Over Marijuana Photo
Ok let me get this straight. Phelps wins eight gold medals in Olympic swimming, absolutely crushing the best swimmers in the world and making him the greatest swimmer in history. He also smokes dope? Sorry but you can’t be the greatest swimmer in history while smoking dope. Perhaps there are other drugs in this scenario.
Who says you can't be the
Who says you can't be the greatest swimmer in history while smoking dope? Kareem Abdul Jabbar is considered one of the greatest centers of all time and he burns dope like a chimney. And oh, just because he smokes dope are you insinuating he's using steroids? It's like saying if you drink alcohol you also do cocaine.
Idiot!?! WTF Phelps? Come
Idiot!?! WTF Phelps? Come on!

Michael Phelps struck me early on as emotionally very young. And parallel thought was he would be very vulnerable as he goes forward with his celebrity. The pot smoking bears these thoughts out. He has a great coach when swimming...he probably should concentrate on thoughts from a life coach away from the water. His mother is probably on his tail over this one. If it hadn't been weed it would have been something else. Figure it out now kiddo. The consequences just get bigger.
Boycott
I found a link to a petition. I suggest we put Kellogg in their place. I hope everyone will sign this and if you know of another petition, please post it here.

Go Kellogg
Smart move. He's not worth keeping around if he cannot respect an agreement he willingly made. Everyone knows Kellogg's has maintained a wholesome image for many years. They should be applauded for maintaining their standards.
Hipocrisy much?
Kellog's wholesome image didn't stop them from signing him in the first place, even though he is is a convicted drunk driver (Dec 2004). That's not a deal breaker, but taking a hit off of a bong is? Please...
