Cavs Beat Down Phoenix, 109-92

On Wednesday night, Mo Williams went off like somebody just rear-ended his Bentley. He dropped 44 sublime points on the Suns and helped the Cavs to a big win to end their first two game losing streak of the season. Mo also had 7 assists, which gave him an all around impressive evening. He heads to the All-Star game now after showing just how crazy the rest of the coaches in the NBA and the Commissioner were for taking so long to select him.

Mo made several difficult shots, including one where his arm was held as he launched a three. No whistle blew, which seems typical these days as the refs get at least 5 calls wrong every game. So Mo adjusted his body in midair and fired the ball up anyway. Of course it went in! But his ability to get into space and take a variety of quality shots throughout the game is what made the evening really special. He was 18-26 from the field and made 7-9 from behind the arc. And he was fun to watch as he did it.

LeBron James, who apparently wasn’t feeling very well, made half of his field goal attempts and totaled 26 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists. It’s the prototypical LeBron game, even though he played far few minutes than normal. He looks like he could use the much deserved break this weekend. For that reason I’m glad he only has one game to play in and none of the other nonsense to worry about.

Ben Wallace was solid on defense and snagged 11 boards. Wally Szczerbiak started off dressed in a parka he was so cold. But he ended up much better than he began, contributing 11 points and 4 rebounds. Anderson Varejao had another good game, scoring 13 points and doing all the other little things we come to expect from him. Daniel Gibson was inconsistent, especially when shooting. However, he managed to score 9 points and play better defense than he recently has, stealing the ball 4 times.

That was really the story for the Cavs tonight. The started off shooting poorly and getting racked by the quick Suns offense, then they got their offense going to build a lead, then they clamped down on defense in the third quarter. The Suns only scored 19 and 21 points respectively in the final two quarters. The Cavs doubled Phoenix’s steal total, 16 to 8. That’s where they one the game.

Along those same lines it was great to see Coach Mike Brown coerce his team into playing better defense when they needed it. That didn’t happen against the Lakers or Pacers. We heard Brown and the players say that their opponent just had a good game plan and made it work. I say bull. They had a game plan, sure, but the Cavs lost those games because they made no adjustments to either aspect of their game. Wednesday night was different because they found a way to slow down the quick transition game of the Suns and get points of their own by feeding the hot hand in Mo Williams. Now we get to enjoy an All-Star break with two players and a coach representing our team.
