Wal-Mart Closing Ohio Optical Lab Employing 650 People
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. announced Friday that it would be closing an Ohio optical lab which employs about 650 workers. The lab, located near Columbus, currently processes eyewear orders for the vision centers operating in its U.S. Walmart stores.
Volker Heimshoff, divisional manager of health and wellness for Walmart in the U.S., said in a statement:
"This decision along with expansions and improvements to our other eyewear manufacturing facilities will allow Walmart to reduce costs and operate our optical business more efficiently."
Those workers affected by the plant's closure will receive regular paychecks and benefits for the next 60 days, and are eligible for positions at nearby Walmart and Sam's Club stores.
Orders sent to the Ohio lab will now be dispersed to other facilities. Walmart's optical labs in Crawfordsville, Ind. and Fayetteville, Ark. are expanding and will add 100 new jobs. Still, it's bad news for Ohio as more of our state's workers are finding themselves without a job.

wal-mart closing optical lab
What this blog does NOT tell you is that wal-mart is now dispersing lab work to mexico as well as Crawfordsvill and Fayetteville. The Ohio lab was opened less than ten years ago and was a state of the art facility. Make no mistake, these 600 jobs in Ohio were sacrificed in order to give low wage jobs to Mexican citizens. At the same time, prices in the vision centers increased. So much for passing the savings on.
