More Than 17,000 File Appeals to Cuyahoga County Property Tax Bills

In excess of 17,000 property owners within the county have filed appeals to their property taxes with the Cuyahoga County Board of Revision. The deadline to appeal was at the close of business on Tuesday, March 31. Filings included both residential and commercial property owners.

Those who have filed an appeal will be contacted later this year and will meet with board representatives. They will then have to show why the Cuyahoga County auditor's valuation of the property is too high in the current market.

Local boards of education for any school district within any municipality in Cuyahoga County, as well as the mayor or legislative authority of any municipal corporation within the county, are also permitted to file similar complaints. Boards of education are also allowed to file counter-complaints against taxpayer complaints, and file original complaints for value increases.

The Board of Revision is charged with assisting citizens in filing complaints, notifying parties of hearings and decisions, and arbitrating complaints by a quorum of two. Decisions made by the board may be appealed in an appellate court, which requires the board to prepare court transcripts. The board also has the duty to submit correction notices to the Auditor's office when board and court decisions are finalized.

The Cuyahoga County Treasurer, Auditor and President of the County Commissioners are all statutory membrs of the Board of Revision.
