Governor Rick Perry Says Texas Could Secede from the U.S.
At one of three anti-tax "tea parties" that he attended Wednesday, Texas Governor Rick Perry reiterated his stance against the government and for states' right as those in the audience shouted "Secede!" Perry said that the government has abanoned the country's founding principles of limited government, stating that the federal government is strangling citizens with taxation, spending and debt. He even said that one day, Texans might get so fed up with the way things are going that they may wish to secede from the union.
Perry also said that Texas' economy is in relatively good shape compared to the other states, and with the "federal budget mess."
Answering questions from reporters, Perry suggested that Texans might get so fed up they would want to secede, but said that he sees no reason why they should do that:
"There's a lot of different scenarios. We've got a great union. There's absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what might come out of that. But Texas is a very unique place, and we're a pretty independent lot to boot."
Perry also gave those reporters a quick history lesson, pointing out that when Texas entered the union in 1845, it was with the understanding that it could pull out. And they did. In 1861, Texas seceded, but victory by the North in the Civil War quickly put an end to that.
Perry is up for re-election against U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson, a fellow Republican. Over the past few weeks the 2010 race has been heating up, and Perry is making a name for himself by being very anti-government. He rejected $550 million in federal economic stimulus money which was slated to help Texas' unemployment trust fund, and last week he joined state lawmakers at the Texas Capitol in pushing a resolution supporting state's rights protected in the 10th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
The Texas governor has also said that the federal government has become oppressive in its size and interference with states. Perry believes he could be at the center of a new national movement whichi s coordinated and focused in its opposition to the actions of a federal government:
"It's a very organic thing. It is a very powerful moment, I think, in American history," he said.
Could this be the beginnings of the fragmentation of American society and government, as predicted by a Russian professor just ten years ago? It's highly unlikely, but the timing of the growing anti-government movement is pretty on target.

I want too applaud you for standing for the people of the "Great State Of Texas",
because as you well know the "Federal Government" is not listening to the
American people. In all my life I have never seen such arrogance in the
"White House". I live in the beatiful state of Oregon , but the Government is
strongly Democrats. I myself am a strong Republican and find it very frustrating
too live in my beatiful state with all the corruption and high taxes that are killing
many small businesses. I told my wife that we need to move to your great state
as soon as possible. I have always been very patriotic for our country and am
a veteran of the Viet Nam era.
I hate to say it but I do not feel safe and am afraid for our country and our
Constitution. The people in the"White House", or should I say the "New Admin-
astration have turned a"Deaf Ear"on the people who hold to the Constitution and
the"Bill of Rights". For the first time in my life I went too a "Tea Party", with my
oldest daughter of five. We were very dissappointed because the government
bused in Mexican people 80 miles away from where we live and the locals
had too stand outside and wait. Three hours later a detective came out and told
us that our "State Representative David Wu", exited out the back because he was
afraid of the locals. I could not believe my ears at what I just heard. Mr. Wu should
be ashamed but I know he's just another liberal not willing to listen to the people
of Oregon.
Well Mr. Perry, I wish you were our Govenor then I could be proud to be living in my
state,but I very proud of your stand. My friends and I what to wish you well for your
"Patriotism", too God and the Constitution.

Just like all states, Texas has its inner city and its country areas. Not all Texans are ranchers, and not all wear hats. Being from Chicago myself, I can tell you that there are farmers in the suburbs of Illinois also. Unless you are a vegan, you eat meat that was grown in any state in the union--maybe even Texas. The United States has done pretty well holding the union together. Even the US Civil War was much less about slavery than about protecting and enforcing the omnipotent will of the federal government.
One one side of the coin, secession looks like an unavoidable event. States fed up with the bureaucratic morass that is Washington have a duty to their citizens to do just that.
On the other side, secession is almost a prescription for political and economic suicide unless proximate states do likewise and at the same time. But even then, it is a crap shoot that could lead to Civil War 2 and untold suffering.
One thing does seem for sure, though, and that is that the current status quo of the government/corporate hegemony (military/industrial complex) is eventually going to lead to some major problems for our nation.
Seriously, Texas is a wart on the corpus of the United States. The state is a net-drain on our economy and we don't need it. Let em go, we'll all feel a lot better and Texans can finally be forced to take actually responsibility for their poor decisions.

After the Civil War, Texas retained the right to seceed. The Texas flag can fly at the same height as the US flag, a privilege NO OTHER state has. Texas is not cattle or stetsons anymore. You've been watching to many old westerns. While its true that Texas is pretty dry west of the Balcones Scarp, the eastern portion of the state is a sub-tropical wetland. At times we have far too much fresh water.
Alabama has plenty of water resources and we want to secede with Texas. We are tired of being "legally" robbed by the federal government!!

1) It would be a 3rd world country in no time flat, bearing a greater resemblance to Mexico than the US.
2) The US Federal Government would never allow it, and would stomp Texas in a very brief civil war.
