Mel Kiper, That was a Great Call on Mike Mitchell Out of Ohio U

If there is one figure in the sports media I had to single out as someone I have the most disdain for (there are many), the #1 person would be Mel Kiper, Jr (can someone tell me who Mel Kiper, Sr is by the way?).

He once again proved himself to be nothing more than an walking talking idiot (hardly a surprise) on Saturday. The Oakland Raiders selected Darrius Heyward-Bey with their first round selection and that sent Kiper in a tizzy saying he was only the 17th best on his board. Umm, Mel you don't run an NFL team and considering Bey is blistering fast maybe you have never heard the adage that you can't teach speed. Maybe more embarrassing for Mr Big Hair is the fact that one of the analysts at the NFL Network guessed that the Raiders would choose Heyward-Bey with their pick.

The Raiders again proved (this time in a much bigger way) how dumb Kiper really is with their second round selection. With the 47th overall pick Oakland selected Michael Mitchell. This really got under Kiper's skin. Kiper declared that he had never heard of the player out of Ohio University and that the team could have waited till the fifth round to select the safety (or wait to grab him in free agency as his "sources" told him only one other team was looking at him). Chris Berman, perhaps number 2 on my hatred list of media-types, chimed in that ESPN didn't even have a highlight of the player. The world, doesn't revolve around Bristol, Chris. I quickly went to YouTube to watch Mitchell and right away knew why the Raiders choose him. He can play. Watch the clips:

NFL executives aren't going to tell every Tom, Dick, and Harry at ESPN that they have a blue-chip prospect that they think will go unnoticed. It appears that Kiper and Co. over at ESPN were proved to be even dumber with USA Today writing today:

The Raiders have taken some criticism among draft analysts for selecting Ohio safety Michael Mitchell with the 47th overall pick. (They also surprised many by taking Maryland WR Darrius Heyward-Bey with the seventh pick.)

Several analysts said on ESPN and the NFL Network last night that they knew little about Mitchell. The NFLN's Mike Mayock suggested Mitchell was a late-round pick at best.

But it turns out the Raiders may have had good reason to select Mitchell at 47. The Bears told Mitchell they planned to take him with the 49th overall pick.

"When (the Bears) did that, I was like, 'I'm going to be a Chicago Bear,' " Mitchell told reporters in a conference call. "That's what I was thinking."

After seeing the player they coveted gone from the draft board, the Monsters of the Midway traded their draft pick.

In the mid-90's Bill Tobin had the immortal line on Kiper saying:

"Who the hell is Mel Kiper? He's never been a player, he's never been a coach, he's never been a scout, he's never been an administrator, and all of a sudden, he's an expert. He has no more credentials to do what he's doing than my neighbor, and my neighbor's a postman."

It is a good thing Mel Kiper isn't running the Browns.

Comments

Gotta disagree a little.

First, if the Raiders and Bears are the two front offices we're using to argue that this was a good pick, that doesn't convince me. Both are suspect, at best. Second, the video shows me the kid can hit hard and closes fast. But that makes him the next Roy Williams, and that's not a compliment. He doesn't wrap up and he doesn't play the ball. How many of those huge hits he landed in college will miss completely or glance off in the NFL? My bet is a lot of them.

If the Raiders (or Bears) took him in the 4th round, I would say it's a stretch, but not a terrible risk. Al Davis took him in the second round, which is insane to me. We'll see!

I agree that the reaction by ESPN was pretty nasty though. And if a video is on YouTube, the freaking Worldwide Leader should have it!

Kevin, The Video wasn't

Kevin,

The Video wasn't hard to find - I was watching it as Berman and Kiper were discussing the pick as a matter of fact. I actually was on Twitter and told @BobMcDonald about the video and I thought he could play just after viewing his highlight reel.

I told my wife that I bet another team was probably looking at him and that is why I had the reaction that I had after being proven I was correct. I am going to guess that Mitchell will have a good NFL career.

Yeah, I hear ya. Kiper is a

Yeah, I hear ya. Kiper is a joke and so is McShay, who loved the Bengals' draft which included two busts (Andre Smith, possibly Rey Maualuga) and at least one new future convict (Bernard Scott) for their stellar roster.

Of course, I'm just as big an idiot as those two, so whatever!

he's gonna stink. he can't

he's gonna stink. he can't cover anyone.the highlight reel kept showing him getting burnt.truth is,you cant judge a draft until they have played a couple of years anyway.al davis is senile

he's gonna stink????

What video are you watching. He can cover, he was trained as a Corner originally. He has good footwork and he is not getting burned, he is arriving right when the ball does. And, he is playing safety, free that is, he isn't covering anyone. I have no idea how this kid will pan out, but based on his ability to hit that hard, his workout and 40 time he so blows the other safeties away. I bet that if this kid was invited to the combine, he would have shot up the board and been talked about as a late first rounder.

Tim McCarver should be #1 on

Tim McCarver should be #1 on every sports fan's list of" someone I have the most disdain for (there are many"),

Well, I have instantly put

Well, I have instantly put the "mute" button on for the last 15 years after McCarver opened his trap so he didn't come to mind although he should have.

ESPN and it's affiliates

ESPN and it's affiliates aired 4 Ohio Bobcat games last year, including the Ohio State game that OU led after three quarters. And the network also aired up to 10 games during Mitchell's first three seasons. If they wanted film, they didn't have far to look. Idiots.

Wrong

The reason Kiper bashed both picks is because they were horrible value. Heyward-Bey would've been available in the teens, and Mitchell would've been sitting around probably in the sixth or seventh round. If the Raiders wanted to maxmize the value for thier picks, they should've traded down, gotten extra picks and then gotten the same guys and other guys with the extra picks.

Kiper was right. The draft is not about necessarily who will be the best only, but a combination of picking the best people at the value at which they're demanded. The Raiders could've easily gotten Heyward-Bey and Mitchell and also a bunch of other guys is they had assessed value as well as talent.

Plus I'm just going to go out there and say Crabtree is going to be a much better wideout, and Mitchell will have to deal with a lot faster players than he covered at Ohio (not OSU, mind you). Good luck, Al.

"Mitchell would've been

"Mitchell would've been sitting around probably in the sixth or seventh round."

The Bears are on record as saying they were drafting him with the 49th pick. Other teams were probably looking at him as well.

Stop getting all your information from that blowhard Kiper (and ESPN for that matter) and maybe you will learn something about the NFL.

This is getting annoying but

This is getting annoying but let's go over it because it isn't that complex. Name me one team that wanted to trade into the top 10 AND didn't want Sanchez? The likelihood of trading down was small especially when reports out of NYC the day before the draft were that the Giants woulda moved down to 14 to pick up Heyward-Bey. So the Raiders would have moved somewhere between 8-13 to be sure they'd get the player they wanted (with the added bonus one of those teams are the Broncos who wouldn't have made a deal with Oakland).

And what's this value of pick garbage? They should have picked someone they didn't want because Mel Kiper thinks so?

Next, did you read THIS article...it clearly states Chicago wanted Mitchell two picks later.

So by your thinking....Crabtree will be better, Mitchell will have to deal with faster players....does that not apply to Crabtree? Or only Mitchell will be facing faster players?

we got some really good bloggers on here

and some real idiots.. mel kipers an idiot and the guy named "WRONG" is too. its funny how some people try to be an expert, are but extremely biased. some people should really shut up and just read rather then write.

For everyone bashing on

For everyone bashing on Kiper and the guys at ESPN need to quit their shit talking cause I dont see you on TV having discussions with NFL coaches on where your draft choice might be. I know Kiper has no pre-NFL experience but hes in Bristol for a reason.
