PepsiCo to Launch New Variety of Pepsi Containing Fat-Blocking Fiber in Japan

On Tuesday, PepsiCo will launch a new version of Pepsi that features a fat-blocking fiber known as dextrin. Of course it will not launch in the U.S., but rather, it will go on sale in Japan.

In an announcement on the company’s website, PepsiCo explains how dextrin helps to reduce fat levels in blood. Studies conducted on rats suggest that dextrin can reduce the absorption of fat in the body, as well as lower cholesterol levels.

A spokesman for the company said that “Pepsi Special” will have a “crisp refreshing and unique” aftertaste. It will first be sold in Japan, and features a “luxury” gold and black bottle with the Pepsi logo on the side.

This is not the first time that PepsiCo has launched odd versions of its namesake drink in Japan. In the past, they’ve sold yogurt and cucumber flavored sodas in Japan, and this Christmas they’ll be selling Pepsi White, which will feature a tangerine tang.

It’s not clear if or when Pepsi Special will make its way over to the U.S.
