City in Washington State Bans Thongs and See-Through Dresses

Under new laws passed by the city of Yakima in Washington state, women who bare too much flesh by wearing thongs and showing off what officials call "cleavage of the buttocks" now face a fine up to $1200 and being thrown in jail. The city has also passed a law making it a crime for women to wear see-through dresses in public.

Yakima Mayor Dave Elder proposed the law in response to what he calls an explosion in coffee shops featuring scantily clad women. At least three coffee shops in the city recently opened up and use attractive "baristas" that serve customers wearing bikinis or skimpy clothing that exposes their thongs.

City council voted five to two Monday to make it a crime for women to be caught in public exposing a thong or g-string. Under the new laws, women exposing too much flesh face up to 90 days in jail and a $1200 fine. The penalty increases if the person exposes themselves to a child under 14, with up to one year in jail and a nearly $5000 fine.

While the law is aimed at the "sexpresso" businesses, it could affect other women. A number of women in Yakima have said that the mayor should be focused on other things rather than women's underwear, while one said that he was trying to impose Taliban-like restrictions on the city.

New Orleans Reclaims Title as Murder Capital of the U.S.

An analysis of new FBI statistics by the Times-Picayune shows that once again, New Orleans is the nation's murder capital. The newspaper determined that with 64 killings per 100,000 people in 2008, New Orleans had the highest per capita murder rate in the country.

Coming in second was St. Louis, who had 47 murders per 100,000 people. The state of Louisiana also had another city come in the nation's top ten - Baton Rouge, with 30 murders per 100,000. Baton Rouge gained population after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

The per capita estimate for New Orleans was based on the FBI's estimate of the city's population at 281,440 as of July 1, 2008. The Greater New Orleans Community Data Center, however, lists the city's population for the first half of 2008 at 324,357. But even using the higher population figures, New Orleans still would easily claim the top spot with 55 murders per 100,000 people.

Rihanna to Appear at Chris Brown's Preliminary Hearing as Possible Witness

According to Rihanna's attorney Donald Etra, the singer will appear at a hearing next month as a possible witness in the assault case against ex-boyfriend Chris Brown. Etra says that prosecutors have told him Rihanna will receive a subpoena to testify at the preliminary hearing on June 22.

The focus of the preliminary hearing is to determine whether there is enough evidence to continue the case against Brown.
