Oil Rig Explosion Survivors Were Held Captive for 40 Hours & Denied Contact with Outside World
By Leader Staff. Published on 05/21/2010 - 2:42pmThe Deepwater Horizon oil rig Transocean exploded on April 20 in the Gulf of Mexico. 11 people died in the blast, and survivors were held captive for nearly two days with no outside contact at all.
The Guardian interviewed one of the survivors, Stephen Davis, whow as working on the rig in the Gulf of Mexico last month during the explosure. Davis says that he and other workers were taken to a support ship where they were then held for 40 hours. During this time, they were not allowed any outside contact. They could not even call their families to let the know that they were alright.
When the support ship finally moved, Davis says it didn't head directly for shore. It first stopped at two more rigs to collect and drop off engineers and coast guard crew, before finally arriving at Port Fourchon, Louisana.
Finally on land, the men were greeted by a line of portable toilets to be used for drug tests. Then, they were loaded on to buses, given a change of clothes and boxes of sandwiches, and taken to a hotel in Kenner, LA, when they were finally reunited with their families.
Kevin Costner Donates Invention to Clean Up BP Oil Spill
By Leader Staff. Published on 05/21/2010 - 10:06am
Actor Kevin Costner has spent many years and many millions of dollars inventing and perfecting a device that cleans oil from seawater. Desperate for ideas, British Petroleum has given the okay to test out six of Costner's devices this week.
Costner's high-speed centrifuge machine is called "Ocean Therapy." Here's how it works: it is placed on a barge and sucks in large quantities of polluted water, separates out the oil and spits back out 97% clean water. Costner's business partner, lawyer John Houghtaling, describes it as being "like a big vacuum cleaner."
Costner first assembled a team to create the device in the aftermath of the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska. His brother, Dan Costner, is a scientist and helped to create the device. Together, the Costner brothers formed Costner Industries Nevada Corp. to pursue various energy projects.
Over time, Costner has put in $26 million into the Ocean Therapy project. He got a license for the device in 1993 from the Department of Energy, and has for years been trying to promote it.
Last week Costner demonstrated the device in Louisiana, and desperate for some help in cleaning up the spill in the Gulf of Mexico, BP decided to give his invention a shot.
Cleveland Leader Participates in Everybody Draw Muhammed Day

By Leader Staff. Published on 05/12/2010 - 11:28am
Guerdwich Montimere led his Texas high school basketball team to the state playoffs, but this week was revealed to be a 22-year-old imposter. Police arrested the 6-foot, five-inch fraud who was playing for the Permian Panthers as 16-year-old sophomore "Jerry Joseph."
Police have charged Montimere with presenting false identification.
The team's coach, Danny Wright, said that he is still in disbelief after being told about the deception by education officials. Wright had allowed Montimere to move into his home in the summer of 2009 after he claimed to be homeless.
Wright told reporters:
“I didn’t do anything for my other sons that I didn’t do for Jerry, Guerdwich I guess, whoever he is. I feel bad for my kids that treated him like a family member and embraced him and loved him.”
Montimere is actually a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Haiti. He was found out when coaches from Florida recognized him in April as having been a star high school player in Fort Lauderdale several years ago.
Montimere had enrolled in a local junior high in February 2009 using a birth certificate that said he was 15-year-old Jerry Joseph. He then moved on to Permian High School in Odessa.
Arizona Image Problems & Boycott Could Cost the State $90 Million
By Leader Staff. Published on 05/11/2010 - 10:34am
As a result of Arizona's new, highly controversial immigration law, travellers are boycotting the state and conventions have been cancelled. According to estimates by city officials, metropolitan Phoenix itself stands to lose as much as $90 million in hotel and convention business over the next five years.
The state's new immigration law requires police to ask for proof of citizenship if they suspect someone is in the U.S. illegally. This law has attracted quite a bit of negative attention, both national and internationally, and has spurred calls for tourists and businesses to boycott Arizona. Critics say that it promotes racial profiling.
City and tourism officials in Phoenix have composed a watch list of approximately 20 events. The list is composed of four organizations who have cancelled events, and more than a dozen others that have scheduled events but have expressed concern over the new law. Events on the watchlist would affect city-run venues, including the Phoenix Convention Center and the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown Hotel.
David Krietor, a deputy city manager tracking the issue, said:
"We have an image and public relations problem of what might be unprecedented proportions."
Social Security Administration Releases List of Most Popular Baby Names for 2009
By Julie Kent. Published on 05/10/2010 - 9:05am
In 2009, Isabella dethroned Emma as the top name for baby girls while Jacob held on to being the most popular boy's name for the 11th year in a row.
The Social Security Administration began compiling name lists in 1879, and each year reveals the previous year's most popular names. As it has happened many times in the past, many of 2009's top names were influenced by pop culture.
The boy's name that made the largest jump on the list was Cullen, the name of the lead character in the "Twilight" series of books and movies. Cullen's girlfriend in the series is Bella, which is short for Isabella, they year's most popular name. The fastest rising girl's name in 2009 was Maliyah, an alternate spelling of the name of President Barack Obama's daughter Malia.
But once the popularity has peaked and parents think celebrity-inspired names are passe, they are quick to drop them. Two of the names with the biggest drops last year were Mylee and Miley (think Miley Cyrus). Lindsay, as in actress Lindsay Lohan, is also dropping quickly in popularity, as is Jonas, as in the Jonas brothers. Barack, as in Barack Obama, is slowly moving up the list. In 2009, there were 69 Baracks born.
40-Year-Old Audio Recording Reveals Ohio National Guardsmen Were Ordered to Fire at Kent State
By Julie Kent. Published on 05/08/2010 - 9:18pm
The Plain Dealer revealed a bombshell today, confirming what many have long suspected occurred during the infamous Kent State shootings of 1970. New analysis of a 40-year-old audio tape of the event reveals that the Ohio National Guardsmen who fired on students and anti-war protesters on the fateful day of May 4, 1970 at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio were ordered to prepare to shoot.
The PD enlisted the assistance of two forensic audio experts who utilized today's much more modern technology to enhance and evaluate the old recording. The enhancements reveal a male voice shouting: "Guard!" and then several seconds later "Prepare to fire!"
Next, on the audio tape, someone is heard shouting "Get down!" It is presumed to be someone from the crowd. Next heard on the tape is "Guard!" and then gunshots. The spoken sequence lasted 17 seconds.
Malcolm X Assassin is Now Free on Parole
By Leader Staff. Published on 04/27/2010 - 4:10pm
The man who shot and killed Malcolm X in 1965 was released Tuesday from prison. Thomas Hagan, 69, walked out of the Lincoln Correctional Facility around 11am.
Hagan petitioned for parole and full release and was rejected for 16 times before being approved on March 3. Now on release, Hagan is under the supervision of the New York State Division of Parole.
Hagan, who was known as Talmadge Hayer at the time of the slaying, was arrested within minutes of shooting Malcolm, who was addressing a crowd of about 400 followers in the ballroom at 166th St. and Broadway. Outraged members of the audience then beat and shot Hagan as he tried to flee the ballroom. He has been in custody ever since.
A former militant member of the National Islam, Hagan admited to his role in the killing during his 1966 trial. Ten years later, Hagan said Malcolm X was killed because he was a "hypocrite" who turned against the Nation of Islam leader Elijah Muhammad. He was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison.
Along with Hagan, two other men were convicted in the killing. They were both paroled more than twenty years ago.
