Cleveland Browns
Dan Coughlin on the Browns and Cleveland Area High School Football Top 35

The only interesting games left are high school affairs. The Browns chronic story line is, "Can they beat the spot?" This past week they did. They were getting 14 and lost by 13, a small triumph.
In my humble opinion, if the Browns trade Brady Quinn, they will go 1-15 because when Derek Anderson gets hurt they'll have no backup quarterback. Injury is inevitable. Two-thirds of all starting quarterbacks in the NFL go down with injury for more than one game at some point in the season. Browns quarterbacks are more vulnerable than most for obvious reasons.
This isn't to say they'll win any games with Brady, either. But at least he knows the plays. That's what it has come down to. Embarrassing, no?
Mangini Talks About Loss to Steelers in Morning Press Conference

(Opening statement)- “Good afternoon everybody. In looking at the tape, talking to the team, I really feel that what I saw, or what I talked to them about after the game is pretty consistent. I thought that it was another example of playing hard throughout the course of the game. I thought the best examples of those were, we had the turnover, then were able to generate a turnover in our area. We had another turnover, we were able to generate a turnover after that, then be able to have the drive that we had, leading to what would have been a one score game at that point. Those things are good, and that’s what I expect each week, regardless of what the situation in the game is, for us to be able to deal with adversity, come back from it and then respond to it in a positive way. I thought another good example of that was when we went down 14-0, came back with a kickoff return for a touchdown or come out after halftime and have the drive that we had and score points and make it a three point game. Those things are positive. Things that we have to continue to address, and what hurt us this weekend, were the turnovers. It’s hard to turn the ball over and be successful, and defensively, some of the big plays. Unfortunately, Ben (Roethlisberger) was able to do some of the things that he’s done to a lot of people. I thought we had some good answers for that, but they weren’t quite what they need to be, whether they be scheme or execution or other. We’re going to correct those things. I think that the style of play is moving forward. The execution needs to continue to get better. We’ll watch the film here today. The guys are in the process of doing that now, then we’ll move on to next week.”
Refs Head Should Roll for Botched First Down in Browns-Steelers Game

I am a person that really hates seeing someone lose their job. This weekend I had some of the worst customer service at a local auto parts store but have no intentions of making a formal complaint because I will give the worker the benefit of the doubt and hope that the person assisting me was just having a bad day. I do not, however, feel the same about NFL official Walt Anderson who completely botched the easiest call in all sports incorrectly giving the Pittsburgh Steelers a first down against the Browns. In giving the Steelers the call the integrity of the entire game comes in question in my mind and the whole complexion of the game was changed allowing the Steelers to score on the drive. The funniest thing about the call was that everyone screwed up on the play as the spot shouldn't even have been that close as Ben Roethlisberger was clearly stuffed at the line of scrimmage.
Anderson said explaining the call:
Bernie Kosar is Back with the Browns
Bernie Kosar, a former quarterback for the Cleveland Browns from 1985 to 1993, has reached an agreement with club owner Randy Lerner to serve as a consultant. Just what Kosar will be consulting the Browns on is not yet known. No specific duties have been outlined, and there may not even be a formal announcement made about their arrangement.
After Lerner and Kosar reached the agreement last week, Kosar is said to have spent several days with the organization. He is said to essentially be "another set of eyes" for Lerner, and will report to him.
Lerner has attempted to lure Kosar, 45, back to Cleveland to fill a role with the Browns for quite a few years now, but Kosar always declined to make the move from Weston, FL back home to Ohio. He consistently cited business and personal commitments as his reasons for being unable to work with the Browns franchise.
After a tumultuous few years and major changes in his life, Bernie now says he has the time to commit. On accepting Lerner's invitation to work with the franchise, Kosar said:
"I've got a little more time now to do it. I'm getting my personal life in order. I still miss football and the Arena thing whetted my appetite."
Mangini Talks Steelers and Josh Cribbs in Morning Press Conference

(Opening statement)- “Good morning. Yesterday we worked on third down and talked a lot about where the Steelers are on third down. They are excellent, offensively, in that area and then defensively, they create some problems with some of the different things that they do there that you have to be aware of. Everyone has to be on the same page and be able to communicate those things out. We’ve made some strides offensively on third-down over the past couple games, but we need to do a lot better job. We made more significant strides, defensively, there, and that’s something that we have to maintain. This will be a challenge. We’ll move in the red area today, red area, goal line, short yardage, review the things that we’ve done from the past two days and then roll into Saturday.”
(On if he would be willing to trade Josh Cribbs)- “[There is] no interest in moving Josh Cribbs.”
Josh Cribbs Latest Cleveland Browns Player to be Linked to Trade Talk

Could special teams superstar Josh Cribbs be the next Cleveland Browns player traded? According to a report from the Dayton Daily News, the Miami Dolphins want the former Kent State quarterback to help with their "Wildcat Offense".
Cribbs had lobbied heavily for a new contract all off season and had even threatened to hold out, but ultimately decided against it. The 26-year-old is one of the most popular players on the team, and if there is any truth to the rumor it would likely have to be an offer that the fans would be able stand behind. Ted Ginn Jr, a former 9th pick out Ohio State and Glenville, would probably gain the stamp of approval by Browns faithful as well as fill a need at the wide receiver position. Stay tuned.
Mangini Briefs the Press as Browns Prepare for Pittsburgh
(Opening statement)- “Good morning everybody. How are we doing? I thought yesterday was a positive start to the week. I really liked the way that we’re communicating defensively. I think that’s helped us over the last few weeks. The more that we get into that pattern, and it’s everybody, it’s the corners, safeties, linebacker, d-line, the more we get used to that just being standard operating procedure, the better off we’ll be. I’ve said this multiple times, where whether it’s a problem formation, a problem play, an adjustment, it’s so much better to be all wrong together than half right and half wrong. A lot of times, you may have a little lapse as to what you’re doing. At that point, you have to turn to the guy next to you and ask questions. I think it carries over offensively. It carries over on special teams. We’re making some progress there. I’ve liked the progress that we’ve made defensively over the last few weeks, especially on third down. I think we’re about 16 percent better than where we had been in the prior three games and that’s key. With Pittsburgh, they’re an excellent third down team. We’re going to have to play well on third down in order to be successful.
Browns Players Talk About Upcoming Battle With Steelers Sunday
Wide Receiver Josh Cribbs On the run the Steelers have had on the Browns)- “They’re a great football team. They went to the Super Bowl in the past three years numerous times. They’re a great football team, great quarterback, great defense. We have to be on our game to match up with them.”
(On if the rivalry is still alive with the Steelers)- “I believe so. You can ask any Browns fan. That will make their life, their day, their week, however you want to look at it, if we can beat this football team. They’re a great football team.”
Kicker Phil Dawson (On if it would be nice to return to face Pittsburgh)- "It would be nice any week. This isn't any week, this is Steeler week. There are a lot of guys in this locker room who have been a part of this rivalry. The amount of respect that I have for that organization and what they have been able to do, to get a chance to play against them is obviously what you want to do."
(On Billy Cundiff)- "He has been doing great. I've been real happy for him. He has helped the team, made the game-winner last week, that's great."
Browns Head Coach Mangini Turns Attention to Steelers Week
(Opening statement)- “A little bit of housekeeping, in terms of last week’s players of the game, Jamal Lewis was the player on offense. Eric Wright was the player of the game on defense. Dave Zastudil [was the] player of the game on special teams. One other award that we give out each time we give out these awards is the practice player of the week. To me, that that’s one of the most important awards that we give out and that was Marcus Benard. He did a great job of giving a look at Aaron Schobel. We evaluate the look that they give, the effort that they give, the intensity that they have and really thought he did an outstanding job. As you guys know, Dave was named the AFC special teams player of the week as well. One roster addition, Brett Ratliff had a little baby boy, Johnny. He’s been added to the family. Also, Big Baby (Shaun Rogers) will miss practice today for personal reasons. He should be back here tomorrow. That’s the housekeeping.
