Bacardi Goes Green at the Very Top

Bacardi Americas’ headquarters has officially opened for business in Coral Gables, Florida. The move, which consolidates 300 employees previously dispersed over 7 buildings, represents a step towards a more efficient and green-friendly future for the family owned spirits company. The state-of-the-art office building was opened on Thursday, February 4, for which Coral Gables Mayor Don Slesnick was on-site to, officially, declare Bacardi Day.

“South Florida has been our home for more than forty years, and it’s exciting to accomplish our goal of uniting all employees previously spread throughout seven different buildings under one roof,” said John P. Esposito, president and CEO of Bacardi U.S.A., Inc. “Working out of this new location will further strengthen our collaboration, communications, cross-functionality and teamwork to continue to market the most recognized and top-selling spirits in the United States.”

The 15 story, 230,000 square-foot complex is the largest built in Coral gables in many years and boasts the latest IT infrastructure; including voice over IP telephone calls, faster access to Internet-based services, collaboration tools, and rich media intranets, to name a few.

Has MySpace Become a Junk Pile?

Launched in August of 2003, MySpace quickly became a popular social networking site. Owned by the News Corporation, which also owns Fox Media; it is the brainchild of Brad Greenspan, Chris DeWolf, Josh Berman and Tom Anderson. By June 2006, MySpace had become the most popular social networking site in the United States. MySpace held onto this spot until April 2008, when Facebook overtook it in popularity and overtook it in the number of accounts. In June of 2008, MySpace laid off 30 percent of its employees.

One of the reasons that MySpace is suffering a decline is the enormous amount of ads on its pages. When MySpace first started, it was a simple way for people to stay in touch with family and friends. It has now developed into a platform for corporations and celebrities to attract customers. When I sign onto my MySpace page, it’s like, “Hey, is that an ad, or it an actual link to something I want to see?” Sometimes it is so hard to tell.

Toyota to Recall 2004 to 2009 Prius Cars -- It's Another Floor Mat Issue

On Tuesday, Toyota Motor Corp. said that hundreds of thousands of Priuses currently in use will be recalled to prevent floor mats from pinning down the gas pedal. However, according to Toyota spokesman Brian Lyons, the recall hasn't yet been issued because Toyota "hasn't developed the remedy yet."

In November 2009, the automaker recalled several models, including the Toyota Camry and Avalon, as well as the Lexus ES sedan in order to reshape the floor and gas pedals to prevent unsecured or poorly fitting floor mats from entrapping the pedal in an open position. As a part of that recall, Toyota now says that Prius hybrids from model years 2004 to 2009 will be recalled in the future to address the same problem.

Toyota is advising owners of those Priuses which fall in those model years to remove their floor mats in the meantime. From the 2004 to 2009 model years, Toyota sold 745,000 Priuses.

Lindsay Lohan Sues E*Trade for $100 Million

Lindsay Lohan is making headlines, and this time it's not for some kind of substance abuse problem or at all related to being obsessed wi The "Mean Girls" actress filed a lawsuit against E*Trade for $100 million, claiming that one of the brokerage's recent television ads featuring a "milkaholic" baby girl named Lindsay is modeled after her and improperly invoked her "likeness, name, characterization, and personality" withou her permission, violating her right to privacy.

The papers were filed on Monday in Nassau County, New York. LiLo is suing for $50 million in compensatory damages and an additional $50 million in exemplary damages. She is also demanding that E*Trade cease runnin the ad.

The ad first aired during the Super Bowl on February 7, and is part of a campaign that features know-it-all toddlers who play the stock market.

Lohan likely takes offense to the "milkaholic" tot due to her past issues with substance abuse. In 2007, she was ordered to spend a day in jail, undergo an alcohol education program, and spend three years on probation after having admitted to drunk driving and cocaine possession.

Verizon Gets Good Reviews Despite Data Outage

Verizon Wireless experienced a data outage from 4 a.m. to 8 a.m. EST, Wednesday morning, March 3. Verizon blamed the outage on defective software at one of its datacenters supporting east coast customers. Customers reportedly were unable to send or receive text, email, or access their applications. Phone service was available but slow.

Despite their recent network glitch, Verizon Wireless has consistently scored on top the list of cell phone providers. Verizon employs 90 test teams that drive millions of miles across the country testing their network.

What sets them apart from their competitors is the wide variety of phones, roadside assistance, and they do not round up minutes. This means that if your call is clocked at 1:57, you are only clocked for 1:57. Their phone service is the most direct as customers also have the option to chat live with a customer service representative, post a forum, or email questions from their website.

Verizon’s RIM Blackberry 8830 is the first smartphone with global roaming capability, which means you can travel the world with voice and data coverage without having to change phones.

Oil and Energy Prices on the Rise

As if the poor economy was not bad enough, we are still being plagued by rising oil and energy prices. These costs are going nowhere but up, and so much of our daily lives now depends on them. This basically leaves consumers with one option: use less. Because the entire consumer market has shifted toward using less of these valuable resources, there are plenty of ways to save energy.

The consumer market has now shifted focus toward being energy efficient. Auto manufacturers are churning out hybrids and electric cars, CFL light bulbs are the new “green” standard for a household, and fuel is being made from corn instead of dinosaurs. Conserving energy is not only important from an environmental standpoint, but more commonly from a budget standpoint. Consumers save money when they use less energy, and this is the primary driving force behind doing so. While some may be satisfied with a hybrid vehicle or energy-saving light bulbs, others are going to even more extraordinary measures to save money. Underfloor heating, for example, uses up to 20% less energy than a conventional radiator system and can make a big difference in monthly expenses.

USPS May Cut Saturday Delivery Service

Saturday mail delivery may soon be a thing of the past for the United States Postal Service, according to reports issued Tuesday. Postmaster General John Potter said that a dramatic reshaping of the agency and significant changes to mail delivery were critical to reducing its massive debt, as he began to outline a proposed overhaul of the country's mail service.

The Postal Service is struggling financially, and could lose up to $7 billion in 2010 according to Potter. Last year, the USPS posted $3.8 billion in losses and mail volume was down 13 percent. Officials say this decline in volume will continue, and is caused by a combination of both the recession and the predominance of email and other electronic forms of communication. Mail volume went from 213 billion pieces in 2006 to a projected 166 billion in 2010.

The USPS is trying to find ways to get out of the red without having to resort to taxpayer aid. Potter is expected to back dropping Saturday service as well as the possibility of raising rates.

Potter said:

"We need to rethink everything and every approach to move the Postal Service forward. We need to reinvest, redefine and reinvigorate the value of mail to business and households."

GM Recalling Over 1 Million Cars

General Motors have announced that they are recalling 1.3 Million vehicles because of loss of power steering. The affected models are the Pontiac G5 and the Chevy Cobalt.

"After our in-depth investigation, we found that this is a condition that takes time to develop. It tends to occur in older models out of warranty," said Jamie Hresko, GM vice president of quality, in a statement. “Recalling these vehicles is the right thing to do for our customers' peace of mind.

Here are the years and models of the recall, including vehicles sold outside the United States:

2005 to 2010 Chevrolet Cobalts, 2007 to 2010 Pontiac G5s, 2005 and 2006 Pontiac Pursuits sold in Canada and 2005 and 2006 Pontiac G4s sold in Mexico.

Magazines are Desperate: Publishers Team Up to Buy Ads Promoting Magazines

Conde Nast, Hearst, Time Inc, Wenner Media and Meredith have all teamed up to place ads in magazines that argue that magazines offer a better experience than the Internet. There's one thing majorly wrong with this desperate attempt at convincing the world that magazines are still relevant: they are pitching the ad to people who already read magazines.

In the advertisement, they make the claim that magazine readership has increased and that magazines are superior to the Internet. This doesn't jive with the fact that magazines have been closing up shop left and right for the past couple years.

Things have to be bad if competing publishers are willing to band together to try to save their industry. It's even worse when they must resort to buying ad space from each other.

Gatorade Finally Confirms They've Dumped Tiger Woods

Gatorade was one of the first sponsors to drop Tiger Woods, and one of the last to admit it. Little more than a week after Woods infamous Thanksgiving Day altercation with his wife that involved him running out of the house and crashing his car into a tree and a fire hydrant, and the subsequent string of women who came forth admitting to affairs with him, Gatorade announced that they would be discontinuing their Tiger Woods Focus Gatorade line.

At the time, Gatorade said that the decision to end the Tiger Woods line of drinks was made prior to the crash and the National Enquirer story that broke the story of his affair with NYC party girl Rachel Uchitel. The timing was certainly more than suspect.

In early December, despite speculation that Gatorade was distancing themselves from the fallen star, the company assured us that all was fine, stating:

"We made the decision several months ago... our relationship with Tiger continues."

WIth another few months to think it over, Gatorade has apparently decided to finally admit what we all knew back in December -- that they no longer want to be associated with Tiger Woods.
