Demjanjuk Picked Up From Home for Likely Deportation

After the a Supreme Court judge rejected his case last week (May 8, 2009), John Demjanjuk decided to finally give up on his decades-old fight to resist deportation for prosecution related to Nazi war crimes. The 89-year-old retired autoworker was picked up from his Seven Hills, OH home by U.S. Immigration and Customers Enforsement agents Monday for an expected deportation to Germany, where officials claim he was involved in the murder of 29,000 at the Sobibor Nazi death camp in Poland.

Demjanjuk was transpoted from his home by an ambulance.

The inevitable deportation will put an end to the pursuit of Demanjanjuk, which has now been dragged out over several decades. It would also set the stage for what is likely to be a very closely watched and controversial German war crimes trial.

An arrest warrant has been issued by official in Berlin, who are charging Demjanjuk with being an accessory to the death of 29,000 civilians at Sobibor in 1943 during World War II. Demjanjuk's country of origin - Ukraine - has long contended that he was a prisoner of war rather than a death camp guard.

Demjanjuk Will No Longer Fight Deportation

A decades long battle to resist deportation is nearing an end. John Demjanjuk's lawyer said that he will no longer fight deportation to Germany, which will thus set the stage for him to be removed from his Seven Hills home and sent to Germany, where he will stand trial on charges that he helped to murder 29,000 Jews as a Nazi death camp guard in 1943.

On Thursday U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens rejected Demjanjuk's case, and did not ask for briefs from prosecutors. His attorney, John Broadly, may ask for another justice to review the case, however it appears as though they have decided against that.

Broadley told U.S. Justice Department officials and German reporters that the case is over, and that they will no longer fight it.

Speaking with the German magazine Der Spiegel, Broadley said:

"That wouldn't get us anywhere. We're not going to do that. ... We have done everything we could.''

It is not yet clear when federal agents will arrive at Demjanjuk's home to take him into custody and put him on a medical airplane to Germany. However, it is not expected to be very long. Demjanjuk, 89, is accused of taking part in the deaths of 29,000 Jews at the Sobibor death camp during the Nazi occupation of Poland in 1943.

Queen Elizabeth Joins Manny Ramirez as a PED Abuser

As sad as it was to find out that former Cleveland Indians star Manny Ramirez had tested positive for performance enhancing drugs, it wasn't shocking. So many baseball greats had been exposed as frauds before that it was just a matter of time before another superstar tested positive for a banned substance. The latest person who has been linked to cheating in sports is an outright shocker. Bloodhorse has reported that a horse in Queen Elizabeth II’s stable tested positive for using a banned substance after a race.

You'd think that the Queen's connections would be a sure fire bet to win if it was using unscrupulous measures against her rivals. Not so, the six-year-old Moonlit Path finished sixth after testing positive for tranexamic acid.

Like Manny, the trainer for the mare Nicky Henderson blames the doctor saying:

“The substance concerned was administered by my vet entirely in the interests of the horse’s welfare, which is always paramount. There was no intention to enhance performance and it is worth pointing out that we won the race in question with the odds-on Ravello Bay.”

Britain's horse racing board disagrees with that saying that the medication was given:

Swine Flu Fears Spread Overseas in Britain, France, Israel, Spain & New Zealand

As swine flu is said to have taken the lives of 81 victims so far worldwide, Mexico and the United States are particularly on edge. But in the age of globalization and quick international travel, the rest of the world is now also concerned about the potential for a global flu pandemic. Doctors in the UK, France, Israel, Spain, and New Zealand are now also treating people who may have contracted the illness.

The swine flu, which is said to have originated in Mexico, already has confirmed outbreaks in the US. The World Health Organization warned of the possibility of a global pandemic, and members are to meet on Tuesday to decide if the alert level should be raised.

According to New Zealand's health minister Tony Ryall, 13 students returned from Mexico yesterday were tested for swine influenza, and 10 had positive results. He says that the cases are "likely" to be swine flu, and the results have been sent to the WHO lab in Melbourne, Australia.

Britain's Got Talent Sensation Susan Boyle Poised for US Success?

Britain's Got Talent Susan Boyle wowed the world with her rendition of 'I Dreamed A Dream' from Les Miserables and according to the shows super-producer Simon Cowell she could land an American #1 album one day. Cowell said about Boyle, who many had thought was a joke before she performed, that it will just take an appearance on Oprah Winfrey to gain stardum in the US:

"If she went on Oprah I think there's every chance Susan Boyle will have the number one album in America, I will predict that." the Daily Mail quoted him as saying.

The clip on YouTube has already reached 12 Million hits. Here is an interview with the overnight phenom from Scottish television:

Barack Obama Doesn't Understand Customary French Greeting

While President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle were said to have brushed up on their cultural etiquette while on board the trans-Atlanic flight from the U.S. to Europe, it appears that the Obamas didn't study quite as hard as they should have. First there was the gaffe where Michelle broke protocol and hugged the Queen of England - a big no-no in England - and most recently the President rejected a customary kiss on the cheek from French President Nicolas Sarkozy's wife, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy.

France's first couple warmly greeted President Obama and his First Lady in Strasbourg, and on the red carpet outside the Rohan Palace, Carla gave Michelle the traditional French kiss-kiss on each cheek. Sarkozy and Obama patted eachother on the back. Then, when they changed places, Sarkozy gave each of Michelle's cheeks kisses. Carla leaned towards Obama's cheek, but the President did not comply. Unsure of what to do, Carla quickly pulled back and instead offered her right hand. So while Sarkozy and Michelle were embracing, as it is traditional to do, Obama and Carla settled on a handshake.

Michael Jackson Eyes Up London Mansion for His Summer Stay

Selling out more shows than I can count on my two hands in literally just minutes, Michael Jackson is clearly still loved in London, despite the controversy that has surrounded his life over the past decade. After such a display of affection for the so-called "King of Pop", Jackson has decided to forgo living out of a hotel for six months and will instead take up residence in a three-story mansion in a sheltered street in the upmarket area of Chislehurst in Bromley.

According to the Daily Mail, Jackson has shelled out £1 million to rent the mansion, where he will live from just before his London residency begins in July, until his final shows in February 2010.

The Bromley Times indicates that Jackson's new abode includes a music room, indoor swimming pool, private wood, and an underground cinema. Built in the 1800's, the house also has quarters for 20 staff and has a state-of-the-art CCTV.

Jackson is expected to move in ahead of his 50-date sold-out residency at the O2 Arena in London.

White House Mistakenly Gives Reporters Phone Number for Sex Line

After dialing the toll-free number given to them by the White House, reporters seeking to talk foreign policy with Obama administration officials live at the G-20 meetings in London this week were instead connected to a phone sex line. The White House accidentally listed a sex line number for journalists seeking an "on the record briefing call with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and National Security Adviser Jim Jones to discuss the NATO summit."

After dialing the number, journalists were greeted by a soft-voiced female that was clearly not Hillary Clinton, asking them for a credit card number if they felt "like getting nasty."

But after dialing, a soft-voiced female recording that was clearly not Clinton asked for a credit card number if you "feel like getting nasty."

After reporters called the White House to report that they were not able to dial into the conference call, the White House issued a corrected press release listing the international line for reporters abroad to dial. However, by the time this was released, the conference call was already under way.

The White House was asked by FOX News to comment on the mistake, and Deputy White House Press Secretary Bill Burton responded:

Charity Urging Madonna to Reconsider Adopting Second Malawi Child

A British charity is urging Madonna to reconsider her rumored plans to adopt another child from the African nation of Malawi. Save the Children UK spokesman Dominic Nutt asked her to "please think twice" before going through with the adoption.

Nutt said that he cannot directly comment on the recently divorced singer's plans, but said that adoptions in such contexts are often inappropriate and unnecessary. He also says that children are best cared for by their extended families.

Speaking anonymously due to the sensitivity of the case, a person involved in Malawian adoption proceedings told the AP on Friday that Madonna has plans to adopt a girl from the impoverished nation.

Madonna first adopted a boy, David Banda, from Malawi in 2006. After much controversy, Malawi courts finally approved the adoption in 2008.

Thousands Begin Protest Ahead of G20 Summit in London

As many as 15,000 protesters have already begun gathering in London for the first in a series of demonstrations to be held ahead of the G20 summit on Thursday in the nation's capital. Today, campaigners waving flags and and armed with signs braved the rainy weather to take part in the "Put People First" march, which has been organized amid the anger at the $27 million cost of arranging the conference in a time of severe economic downturn.

The "Put People First" march features an alliance of 150 groups. Included are various unions, charities, faith organizations, and environmental campaigners. The theme of the protest march is "jobs, justice and climate."

Organizers of the protest have stressed that the events will not turn violent, but nevertheless, a massive police operation has been launched as London officers warned of an "unprecedented" threat posted by the protests.

Richard Chartres, the Bishop of London, said that the event's atmosphere was "positive", noting that it would be a "tragedy" if events were to turn violent.

The G20 Summit begins this coming Thursday in London, and will be hosted by UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. A number of heads of state will be present, including US President Barack Obama, and Russian President Dimitri Medvedev.
