Concert Review: OK Go at the Grog Shop

OK Go played at the Grog Shop in Cleveland this past Friday, November 6th. The band has come to Cleveland many times in the past but this was my first opportunity to see them peform. I heard rumors that they put on an awesome show and found out that the rumors were true.

No matter where you stand in the Grog Shop you feel like you are close to the band. It's a great venue for a concert. OK Go was full of energy from the time they stepped on the stage until the last song.

The band opened the show with a new song titled, "Shoot the Moon". Immediately following were a couple of their popular hits, "Get Over it" and " A Million Ways". Damien Kulash (vocals/guitar) addressed the crowd in between just about every song. One time he asked the fans if they felt Cleveland deserved the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. He then stated that he thought Cleveland was an odd place to put the Rock Hall. After fans shouted for a few moments the topic died quickly but I'm not sure why that was brought up in the first place.

Concert Review — Third Eye Blind

Third Eye Blind performed at the House of Blues in Cleveland Tuesday night. It was also the first CAVS home game so I wasn't really expecting a lot of people to be at the 3eb show. To my surprise I think it was the largest crowd I've ever seen at the House of Blues.

Personally, 3eb will always remind me of high school. They were very popular during my last couple years of HS. The crowd on Tuesday night seemed to be a mixture of fans. Some that were probably big fans in the 90's, like myself and some that seemed younger so possibly fans of the more recent songs.

This was my fourth time seeing 3eb live. One of those times was this past summer at Tower City Amphitheater. The show this past summer and the show on Tuesday night were both to promote the new album titled "Ursa Major" which was released on August 17, 2009. The first single from Ursa Major was "Don't Believe a Word" and was released on June 5, 2009.

Concert Review: Jay-Z at the Wolstein Center

Last night fans nearly sold out the Wolsein Center in Cleveland for the Jay-Z concert.

One of the opening bands, N*E*R*D put on an amazing performance. Their new female vocalist, Rhea was on stage for the entire performance. During "Spaz" Pharrell Williams invited a female fan on stage with him. She was obviously very excited as she danced and sang along to every word. About 15 women joined N*E*R*D on stage during "Everyone Nose (All The Girls Standing In The Line For The Bathroom)".

The count down to Jay-Z began and with ten minutes before show time the screens on each side of the stage started counting down. Jay-Z made a dramatic entrance rising from below the stage as "Run This Town" started. The crowd went crazy and the stage came to life. Without a doubt I can say that this was the best and most elaborate back drop display I've ever seen at a concert. The images changed from city buildings, fancy speakers, and live footage.

Many songs played throughout the night were from "The Blueprint 3" album. However we also got to hear "Jigga", "99 Problems", and Izzo (H.O.V.A.). About half way through the show Pharell took the stage again this time with Jay-Z to sing "So Ambitious".

Don't Forget About the Ghoulardifest This Weekend!

In August we told you to get prepared to head to the Airport Marriot for a trip down memory lane by attending the Big Chuck and Little John "Ghoulardifest". The festival is in its fifth year and celebrates the classic television years from Cleveland's past.

Here is what is on tap for this years festival and interview we conducted with some local media personalities at the Cuyahoga County Fair earlier this year. Read more about the event by heading to their website www.theghoulardifest.com/.

Playhouse Square Review: Young Frankenstein

My first exposure to the Broadway debut of the new Mel Brooks musical, Young Frankenstein, was a brief teaser of performance snippets during the Macy’s Day parade in 2007. At the time, I couldn’t help wondering how it would do stacked up against some of the masterpieces of musical comedy I wished would return to touring the U.S. A fan of the movie starring Gene Wilder, I also wasn’t sure how the screenplay humor would translate to the stage performance.

Following the show’s opening at Playhouse Square’s Palace Theatre in downtown Cleveland last Tuesday, I attended the first Saturday night performance yesterday. Turnout was greater than I had expected with the balcony near full by the time the orchestra was warmed up and the houselights had dimmed. The stage was blanketed in a blue screen featuring a glowing moon and spooky, mist-wrapped mountain with a winding path leading up to a great castle overlooking a small town. With a burst of lighting and thunder, the show was quickly underway.

Interview: Truth and Salvage

Truth and Salvage is currently on tour with The Black Crowes. They are making some solo stops including The Beachland Ballroom on November 3rd. The band consists of four songwriters / lead singers and consists of Bill "Smitty" Smith on drums and vocals, Joe Edel on bass, Adam Grace on the organ, Walker Young on piano and vocals, Tim Jones on rhythym guitar and vocals, and Scott Kinnebrew on lead guitar an vocals. I had the chance to talk with TIm Jones about the current tour, new album and the unique sound they are producing.

Candis: Hi Tim, How are you?
Tim: Great, How you doing?

Candis: Where are you at now in your tour?
Tim: We are in Dallas. It's kind of cool and looks like fall. We don't get a Iot of seasons in Los Angelos so it's nice. I love Cleveland too. I dated a girl for a while from Cleveland and our base player is from Cleveland.

Candis: What part of Ohio is your bass player from?
Tim: He lived in Cleveland during Middle School and High School and his family has a farm in Conneaut.

Candis: How's the tour going, you've been on the road for awhile now?
Tim:We left Los Angelos on August 15th so we've been gone two months now. Started with The Black Crowes on the 25th and we do some shows on our own when they take breaks.

Concert Review – Kate Voegele

Last night Kate Voegele kicked off her fall tour in Cleveland at the House of Blues. What a great place to start a tour, her home town. She seemed so happy and excited to be back in Cleveland.

Kate rocked the stage with her band and played the guitar for nearly every song. She also played a few acoustic songs. Voegele has an incredible voice and when she sings acoustically you really get to a chance to hear her talent.

Kate and her band played songs from both her old and new album. The new album is titled "A Fine Mess". "Lift Me Up", "Angel" and "Who You Are Without Me" were just a few songs included in the set list last night. An enthusiastic version of "Inside Out" was played early on in her set.
