Best Home Pet Remedies for Fleas

Summer and fall are usually the biggest times where you may have problems with flea infestations when you have a pet. And once they enter your home, you usually end up having your hands full, from constantly having to give your pet a bath, to applying chemicals on them constantly, as well as constant cleaning over and over again (let alone all your bedding and clothes). There are many home remedies to help rid your home of fleas, fortunately.

Cut Your Grass Properly

When it comes to mowing your lawn, you need to ensure that your grass is approximately 2 inches. If you cut it shorter than that, you won’t have the right bugs that eat fleas come around, but if it’s too long, especially if your yard is generally green and moist, will also attract more fleas.

Herbal Remedies

There are many plants that deter fleas, and in being so, you can plant. A lot of herbs (that are normally used for cooking and that can grow wild once planted) will help rid your yard. You can plant things such as rosemary, lemongrass, catnip, and even peppermint can help to deter fleas (warning, some things such as wild peppermint can actually take over your lawn, so you may want to use planters for them instead).

Using Diatomaceous Earth for Treatment

The food grade version of DE is the same as industrial types, but it is not treated with chemicals and harsh ingredients. You can spread it thoroughly throughout your yard where your pet normally is to help cut down on fleas. It can dry out flea eggs, and it can even kill fleas. Be sure to wear a dust mask when you’re applying this, as well as not let your pet out until the dust has had time to settle.

Get Rid of Fleas with Garlic Spray

Per 1 gallon of boiling water, use 8 heads of chopped or minced garlic. Let it steep for 12 hours, and pour into a garden sprayer once the garlic has been strained out of it. You don’t want to spray your yard too heavily though, or it can kill bugs that help get rid of other bugs.

Carpet is A Hiding Place

Carpet is where most fleas will reside and you can’t see them. If you have padding underneath your carpet, the fleas will bury into that as well, and you won’t even know you have a bad infestation until it is usually too late. Make sure you use a steam cleaner on your carpets at least a couple times annually. Use your vacuum at least once every week, and empty the canisters (or bags if you have an older one). Also, spread DE on your carpets, let it sit for about a day or two, then vacuum it up (be careful with that last one).

Is This All I Can Do?

There are many home remedies, from household ingredients, to natural ones, and even natural cleaners (you can make a treatment for your pet while bathing them out of 1 cup Hydrogen Peroxide, 3 tbsp OxiClean®, and ½ cup water, massage it all over them, then let sit for 5 minutes before washing and rinsing them with shampoo), as well as many other methods. The methods here aren’t all you can do. Do your research, and never hesitate to ask veterinarians like petvetsonline.org if there are home remedies.
