Best Oral Health & Healthy Smile Guide

Nobody likes to interact with a person with a foul smell coming from the mouth. It is needless to say that your mouth is a home for billions of bacteria. Most of these bacteria turn into plaque and gingivitis. Some even go on to cause serious tooth decay better known as cavities.

If you do not deal with such problems immediately, it may soon give rise to periodontal diseases. If you wish to stay away from serious mouth problems, then you need to follow a healthy oral hygiene on a daily basis. Brushing after every meal, flossing, and using a good quality antimicrobial mouthwash are some of the simple ways to stay away from mouth problems.

How Does Tooth Decay Happen?

The tons of bacteria inside your mouth actually help to recycle the food and drinks that you have the whole day. These bacteria feed on the sugars from these foods and drinks in order to grow and give rise to tooth decay. They also leave behind the waste that is basically in the form of a biofilm and is also known as dental plaque. This dental plaque allows the bacteria to stick close to your teeth for a long time and gradually make acids. This acid damages the tooth enamel causing cavities.

Most of you may not know that tooth decay is basically an infectious disease. Your mouth is a home to approximately 300 various types of bacteria. Most of these bacteria can easily spread like an infectious disease and cause tooth decay. It is said that even a 10-second kiss can help spread around 80 million bacteria between mouths.

The Right Flossing and Brushing Techniques

Flossing and brushing, the right way, can easily help get rid of harmful bacteria from your mouth. The right technique for these activities is discussed below.

Flossing

  • Use 18 inches of floss and wind it around the middle fingers of both hands. Hold it tightly between your forefingers and thumbs and gradually guide it between the teeth in a gentle rubbing motion.
  • Once it reaches the gum line, curve it to form a C against one tooth and slide it gently between the tooth and the gum.
  • Move the floss in an upward and downward movement after bringing it back to the contact point. Hold it tightly against the tooth and rub it gently against the side of the tooth by moving it away from the gum.

Brushing

  • Place the toothbrush at an angle of 45 degrees against the gums and move it back and forth in short strokes gently.
  • Brush the outer surfaces, inner surfaces and the chewing surfaces in order.
  • With the tip of the brush clean the inner surface of the front teeth in an up-and-down gentle stoke.
  • Do not forget to brush your tongue to get rid of bacteria from it and also freshen your breath.

Following the right technique of brushing and flossing will help keep your teeth clean and healthy for a long time and your breath fresh all day long.  If you want to learn more be sure to visit Dentist Fishers IN.
