The sandwich is a worldwide phenomenon that has had many names depending on where you lived. Fast forward to the 21st century, the sandwich is a major staple in Western Civilization. In Cleveland, the sandwich is an artform and a way of life for many local restaurants. Some iconic Cleveland sandwiches such as the Romanburger, the Polish Boy and the Panini overstuffed sandwich push the limits on what a sandwich is. Since a polish boy is a beef sausage on a large roll do you classify it as a hot dog or does the french fries, cole slaw and BBQ sauce grant it sandwich-hood? The Romanburger, even though it has burger in the name, by many standards it is a sandwich. The Panini overstuffed sandwich perhaps it is something more due to the french fries and cole slaw and variety of meats and cheeses.
At any rate, Cleveland has many places downtown where you can get an awesome sandwich. This task was welcome because unlike many meals, the sandwich by design is something that is prepared quickly and to be eaten on the go. Some sandwiches can and should be devoured. Abby actually sat this one out because her personal trainer Jamie caught up with her after the fried chicken article and doubled her workout routine. Au Bon Pain
Au Bon Pain has some of the freshest and healthiest sandwiches in the city. The craftsmanship in the rolls, buns and breads along with meats and toppings can justify wrapping their sandwiches in silk. Since this is Cleveland, a high quality napkin or a mongramed hanky on payday will suffice. The coffee is pretty good too.
