Cleveland Animal Protective League

The Cleveland Animal Protective League (APL) has been an ally for animals in the city for over 100 years.  This is quite an achievement for any organization, especially an independent non-profit.  The Cleveland APL’s mission is to foster compassion and end animal suffering.  The APL takes in dogs and cats whose owners can no longer care for them in addition to strays, investigates animal abuse and cruelty and helps place animals with new families.  On a yearly basis, the Cleveland APL  helps approximately 15,000 animals through its many programs.

Adopting an Animal from the APL

If you are looking for a pet, the Cleveland APL is happy to help.  Prior to taking on a ne pet, it is important that you understand what it takes to care for a pet.  From there you can visit one of the APL Adoption Centers and see which one of the many animals will be the perfect fit for you and your family.

One of the APL adoption specialists will then meet with you and go over the animal’s medical history, organize a meet and greet and then if you are comfortable with adopting your new family member, walk you through the adoption process which include paying fees, presenting ID and making sure all exams and vaccines are administered to your animal.  In addition, your pet is spayed/neutered and your pet will be licensed.  The Cleveland APL has a gift shop that has many of the initial items you will need to care for your pet such as pet food, dishes, leashes toys and grooming supplies.

Events

The Cleveland APL holds many events throughout the year to raise funds to continue operations and increase awareness of what they do.  Over the years many of their events have gained notoriety and have become fixtures in the Cleveland community.  Some of these events are WKYC’s Fur-Get-Me-Not Telethon, Furball Bow Wow Meow Luau, Pledge for Pets and Dick Goodard’s APL Telethon. Other community events include the Cat Yoga, which is held at the APL, Dog Life in CLE which is sponsored by Etsy and you can help the Cleveland APL by purchasing carpet cleaning services from Booking Maid Easy.

Programs

The Cleveland APL has many programs that directly help animals that have been abandoned, abused and need new homes.  In addition to finding animals new homes, the APL helps curb an emerging cat overpopulation problem through its Trap Cat Neuter Return Program.  The Cleveland Apl also helps reduce animal cruelty by investigating and prosecuting animal abuse with its team of investigators.  Project CARE helps area pet owners keep their pets with many resources and also offers spaying and neutering services to help limit pet overpopulation.

Summary

The Cleveland APL has been a bulwark for animals in the Greater Cleveland area since 1913.  Through its programs, they have saved thousands of animals over the years.  If you would like to support them in their mission, please call 216-771-4616 or go to Cleveland APL to find out more about their work and initiatives.
